Heavy Fabrication
ABS Heavy Fabrication is a full service facility certified to CSA47.1 (AWSD1.1) and ASME Boiler Vessel B31.1 and 31.3 standards. Our welders are certified by CWB/AWS and ASME, and are fully trained on flux-core, gas metal, submerge arc, tig and stick electrode welding techniques. Individual customer requirements are followed and enforced in conjunction with our in house certified weld inspectors. (CWI Level 2's).
Due to their size and weight, heavy fabrications are not easily transported and often require cranes or other equipment to move the structure throughout the shop. Our infrastructure including our cranes, positioners, and rollers, are specifically designed to safely handle the largest and most challenging fabrications. Further complementing our heavy fabrication is our latest investments in large and complex robotic welding. The recent advancement in robotic welding, or “next generation robots”, has proven far more precise and intuitive than older designs. ABS has several cells designed to harness this technology to effectively drive quality and throughput in heavy weld deposit applications.
Why Sub-Assemblies Make Sense
Heavy fabrication projects often have numerous individual parts – sometimes on the order of hundreds or thousands - that are needed to assemble a final product. Preparing sub-assemblies before they are needed for final product assembly increases productivity and increases speed to market, saving OEMs significant time and money. ABS has the necessary tools and skilled workforce to complete complex sub and final assemblies, often times at a higher level of quality than the OEM. ABS offers OEMs a complete manufacturing solution that strengthens the supply chain. Since every step in the manufacturing process builds upon the next, it is cost-effective to partner with a supplier that can start and end the project with you – from the concept and design phase through production, sub-assembly and final assembly operations.
Robotic Welding Drives Efficiency
Further complementing our heavy fabrication is our latest investments in large and complex robotic welding. The recent advancement in robotic welding, or “next generation robots”, has proven far more precise and intuitive than older designs. ABS has several cells designed to harness this technology to effectively drive quality and throughput in heavy weld deposit applications. Recent innovations like smart sensors, track mounting, and large part positioners make robotic welding even more feasible for heavy fabrications. Process automation has long been a source of productivity and efficiency gains in manufacturing. Welding tasks are an excellent option for automation due to their repetitive nature. The key benefit of robotic welding is the ability to rapidly produce high-quality welds, increasing fabrication productivity and consistency as well as safety on the shop floor.
Robotic welds are known for their excellent quality. Since robots produce more consistent welds with fewer errors, there is less rework required and lower waste generated – making robotic welding more cost effective than traditional manual methods.
Robots are able to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no breaks except for occasional maintenance. Thus, robots are capable of higher welding productivity and throughput. Higher volumes and faster cycle times translate to lower costs that provide a critical competitive edge.
Robots often perform welding tasks that can be hazardous to humans. The use of robotic welding removes operators from higher risk processes, improving personnel safety.
